RadioheadRemix, remixed

Radiohead have released the stem tracks from Nude, for people to remix. They've already got some really great tracks on their site, the top one is a really cool electro mix.

Anyway, the embedded player didn't seem to work for me (I think it was just trying to download the whole song rather than stream it) and I also wanted to download a few tracks to put on my iPod. So I've made a greasemonkey script that will add a download button next to each track. (Greasemonkey is an add-on for firefox, you need that first)

Friend links

I just updated an old greasemonkey script I wrote some time ago. When you type a friends name into a textarea it will add a link to their blog from a predefined list. I've extended it using Jeremys little inline microformat pattern. As demonstrated in that link to his site. Now on any sites you choose (set them in GM settings, it runs on all by default) you can have hCards and XFN wrapped around your friends names as you type.

Download the script here. After installing it reload the page, then go to Tools>Greasemonkey>User Script Commands>Edit Friends Names.

Question: The outer tag is a span, to hold the vcard class. Now would a cite be more suitable here? In most use cases I can think of (eg. referring to people from blogs) you are essentially citing that person in some way. Does anyone else agree?

Second Life geotagging in Flickr

After seeing Kisa's cool SL2Flickr app that lets you send a postcard from within SL straight into your flickr account, and the conversations around the geotags for it (machine tags of course). I decided all it needed was a GM script to add an SLurl, similar to the built in Upcoming link when you add an upcoming tag to an image.

Flickr SLurl

You'll see a link to a SLurl when the machine tags are there, and you can add the tags by just pasting in a SLurl. Download the script here.

It supports the legacy SL2Flickr tags and partial SLurls (just region, or just region, x and y)

The next thing is to use the SL maps api to browse them!

Snap Off!

Has anyone noticed a surge in the use of those annoying mouse over popup things from snap? My first thought was "god they're annoying", second thought was more useful though, "that needs a greasemonkey script" so here's one.

Greasemonkey leads the way

I noticed a little while ago that Flickr added an "Invite to group" link under the comment boxes. Clicking it loads in a list of groups you are an administrator in, you can choose one and inserts some text into the comment box.

What's interesting is how closely this functionality mirrors this popular greasemonkey script. Now perhaps it's just a total coincidence that the flickr developers had exactly the same idea. But it's much more likely that they saw the script in use, looked at the interface and the feedback of it. Perhaps it's also worth noting that they didn't reuse the group list popup from the toolbar over the image and went for a simple combo box instead, just as the gm script uses.

This looks like a pretty good example of greasemonkey leading the way in improving the usability of an application, prototyping the interface and testing the market. I'm sure flickrs usability team pay a lot of attention to the greasemonkey scripts on the hacks group. I wonder if they'll implement my comment tools?

Lumpy del.icio.us Clouds

This is a simple user script to make your del.icio.us tags scale to reflect the number of items, like they do on flickr and other such things. You'll need Greasemonkey to run it. I was surprised del.icio.us didn't do this already, I thought maybe there was an option somewhere. I'm still worried there might be one and I'll look like a fool for posting this, but here it is anyway. Example Tag Cloud

Flickr Comment Tools 1.2

Flickr Comment Tools is a greasemonkey script that adds a number of editing and image inserting features to the standard comments box on flickr photo pages, discussion pages and flickr mail. Along with removing YUI I've updated a few other things since the first release.
  • Streamlined popup code for image chooser
  • Added indent and outdent buttons for blockquotes
  • Is now compatible with other greasemonkey scripts that add or remove text from comments
Get the new version here, feedback welcome.

Blogger Comment Feeds

I don't think I'm the only person who finds it difficult to remember what blog posts they've commented on and fails to check back on the conversation, many blog applications let you subscribe to a feed of the comments, but not blogger. So a little while ago I wrote a script that will screen scrape and parse up the comments page, and give you an RSS feed. It's not perfect but it's worked ok so far, I use it on my blog here to offer a comment feed on each individual post. Thats great as long as everyone starts using it and I can subscribe to all the post comments I want, but not everyone does use it. So I also wrote a greasemonkey script that gives me a subscribe button on every blogger comments page. More info here.

Rich flickr comments for photos and discussions

This is a simple greasemonkey script that gives you a nice familiar rich text editor for the comment boxes on flickr. It will work with comments and group discussions. It also lets you quickly and easily reference one of your own pictures straight off your photostream. You will need greasemonkey and firefox. FlickrCommentsTools.user.js
